The Gaza Crisis- posted 01/04/09
The following letters were submitted by request of Rabbi Lynn. Please stay posted for further updates to keep us intimately involved with the current events in Israel. The letter to the left was writtin by the Director of Communications with the American Jewish Committee. The email to the right was received by member Sabina Weitzman from an admired Israeli storyteller and playright, Noa Baum.  Sabina submits the email with her following message:  "(I think some of you saw her one-woman performance of "A Land Twice Promised" at the library a few years ago.) While you might take issue with what she is saying, I hope you will consider the idea: that diplomacy and non-violence are the best paths for peace for Israel and the Palestinians - and that you will add your voice to hers (and mine)".
A Letter from AJC
Dear AJC Friend,

Here’s a quick update on AJC activities regarding Gaza.

Since last Friday, even before Israel struck at Hamas in Gaza, AJC has been operating around the clock, using a variety of communications vehicles to convey our strong support for Israel. Early Saturday morning, we stepped up our public relations and communications machine. The main AJC website, www.ajc.org , is the best way to keep up-to-date.

Current Highlights of AJC Action:

On AJC’s homepage is a fresh video interview with David Harris. Produced in the AJC Studio, this is an example of our ability to respond to breaking news with multimedia. VIEW VIDEO .

“Why Israel Had No Choice,” David Harris’s latest Jerusalem Post blog, is now featured at the jpost.com homepage. READ BLOG . Please visit http://cgis.jpost.com/Blogs/harris/ to add your comments and join the discussion.

“Operation Cast Lead” is AJC’s Mideast Briefing on the Gaza conflict by our Jerusalem-based Eran Lerman. READ BRIEFING . Speaking of AJC’s Israel Office, our colleagues have been in close touch with officials in the south to determine humanitarian needs for beleaguered Israeli towns and villages.

AJC sent a letter to President Bush applauding his support for Israel. READ LETTER . We also sent letters of solidarity to Prime Minister Olmert, Defense Minister Barak, and Foreign Minister Livni.

AJC’s Z-word website has daily blogging by AJC staff regarding the unfolding conflict, focusing on anti-Israel charges. Visit http://blog.z-word.com .

In addition, across the agency, AJC has been active with national and local media in the U.S. We have done many television and radio interviews in both national and local markets. Several of our op-eds and letters to the editor have been picked up by major newspapers. And our overseas offices have been in regular contact with the media in their countries.

We will continue to keep you updated, and encourage you to bookmark www.ajc.org .

Best regards,
Kenneth Bandler

From Noa Baum, Israeli Storyteller and Playwright

Dear Friends and supporters,

For the past two days I've watched in alarm and anguish as the crisis has unfolded in Gaza and southern Israel. More than 360 Palestinians have died and hundreds more are wounded -- both Hamas militants and ordinary citizens. More than 120 rockets have been launched into Israel, with one man killed.

Though some Israeli action is an understandable response to continued rocket fire from Hamas, and the idea of contained surgical strikes may be compelling, these airstrikes represent a huge escalation of the conflict -- a crisis that may end in a wider war in which many more Palestinians and Israelis die in the weeks to come.

I would like to invite you to join the many that believe that this path of militarism and militancy cannot lead to a sustainable, safe future for the two peoples. The path to peace, security and freedom for our people is diplomacy, non-violence, and grassroots involvement of civilians on both sides.

Below are some voices to remind us of the moral courage needed now not to resort to violence, and some actions you can take.

1. The PAC J Street in the U.S. issued a petition call for an immediate ceasefire and intends to bring their petition to the Obama transition team as well as to more than 100 Congressional representatives.

2. Help those facing humanitarian need:

Physicians for Human Rights and United Palestinian Appeal are striving to provide food and basic medical supplies to Palestinians in Gaza. Please support them.

Enclosed is an Appeal from Physicians for Human Rights-Israel.

3. Articles by Marc Gopin who conducts diplomacy efforts in the region. He is a professor at George Mason University, a religious Jew and one of my inspirations.
