Becoming a Member of Beth Sholom Temple
Financial Responsibilities and Giving Opportunities
Membership in Beth Sholom Temple is open to individuals and households in which at least one adult is Jewish. Membership confers the privilege to serve on the Board of Directors, serve as a Committee Chair and/or Committee Member, participate as an instructor in our Religious/Hebrew School, take advantage of Members fees for classes and most importantly, exercise the right to vote on those matters that affect the continued growth, development and direction of Beth Sholom Temple. Those who join our Membership demonstrate a commitment to ensuring a continued strong and vibrant Jewish Community presence in the Fredericksburg area, allowing us to sustain full-time Rabbinic leadership.
The financial responsibilities for the Temple are shared by the membership; these include annual dues and building assessments that directly support the mortgage payment. Financial obligations are set by majority vote of the Membership at the Annual Congregational Meeting. The Temple’s fiscal year and membership year is from July 1 – June 30.
Our general dues are based on a Minimum Flat Dues Structure broken out in four categories: Seniors, Singles, Single-Parent Household and Households: The Annual Dues Categories are as follows:
As of July 1, 2008 :
Households $1165
Single-Parent Households $990
Singles $890
Seniors (age 65 or older, individuals or households) $675
Building Dues are $555.00 per year.
General Dues are pro-rated based on when joining Beth Sholom Temple. General membership at Beth Sholom Temple includes Rabbinic services for all life cycle events such as baby-namings, B’nei Mitzvah, weddings and funerals. However, our Religious/Hebrew School operates on a separate budget and therefore has separate fees. It is the Temple’s policy that one must be a member of the Temple before enrolling one’s children in our outstanding Religious/Hebrew School program.
Every year, we ask each member of our temple family to fulfill their pre-determined dues pledge, along with their mandatory building assessments. Contact the Temple office for a complete membership packet including a payment plan form and a financial accommodation form. To better help with our funds allocation, we would appreciate your completing this payment plan form and returning it with your first payment when you join us in membership. For those members needing financial accommodations please complete this form and returned a signed copy for our records.
We ask our members to view dues as a sacred obligation between you and the community as a whole and that if you can afford to pay more than your assessment, it is a mitzvah. It benefits you and those less fortunate. Because dues alone do not cover all of our expenses, we have always relied on fundraising programs, special events and the generosity of those members who choose to give more, and look at it as an additional gift from their heart. We have two special programs in place to support these additional gifts: Helping Hands Fund whose monies offset those in our community who cannot pay their full general dues obligations and a long-term pledge commitment to the Julian P. Levy Building Fund, whose monies go directly to paying our very large mortgage obligation.
As mentioned above, we have a policy that allows those, who truly cannot afford to pay their dues, to have them abated. Abatements can only be allowed with the agreement of the President and Treasurer. To apply for abatement, please contact either of these board members in writing or by phone. Please remember that only temple members are entitled to the services offered by the temple; services of the rabbi, religious school, adult education and other activities.
We also ask that all members consider their commitment to do volunteer work at the temple. With the exception of our Rabbi and the Temple Administrator, our temple runs on volunteer service. We ask everyone who joins our sacred community to help us keep costs down by volunteering for at least one task during the year.
Finally, it is important to note that Beth Sholom Temple is a member of the Union of Reform Judaism (URJ). Without this membership, we would not be entitled to have a Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion-ordained rabbi or access to the programs and services offered by the Union. Being a member of the Union, we are required to pay Maintenance of Union Membership Dues (MUM dues) of approximately $100 per member unit. This membership also provides you with the Reform Judaism magazine.
We look forward to discussing your joining us as a member at Beth Sholom Temple. We invite you to call the Beth Sholom Temple office at (540) 373-4834 or e-mail at ta@bstoffice.net to set up an appointment to meet with the President or Treasurer so that we may answer any questions you may have about the financial obligations of membership at Beth Sholom Temple.
